CASE STUDY - BROWSER ANALYTICS & TESTING

Fjord - Accenture Interactive | London

11 / 12 - 2018

PROJECT  OVERVIEW

In fall 2018, Fjord was designing the web content of the Fjord Trends 2019. I joined the team in Nov 2018 as the sole Analyst & Tester of the project, while they were in the early stage of designing the content. We were 10 creative and technical professionals aiming to launch the project swiftly in the middle of December.

The Fjord Trends 2019 would be released on the main page of the website, and therefore was important to provide responsive design and compatibility for different types of browsers and operational systems.

RESEARCH & EVALUATION

I started the project by conducting small-scale quantitative research via Google Analytics to see the website statistics of Fjord. This was an easy way to learn about the technology used by the target audience.

Here are the key insights from the website statistics:

  • Most preferable web browsers were in order: 1) Chrome, 2) Safari and 3) Firefox, and 4) Microsoft Edge

  • Most preferable mobile browsers were in order: 1) Safari, 2) Chrome, 3) Internet Explorer, 4) Opera

  • Most people had an iPad Air 2 or iPhone 7 or iPhone X.

  • Most people had a macOS Sierra. The number of Windows users was not as much as MacOS users.

As the majority of the target audience didn't use Windows machines, I simulated Windows browsers by using the VirtualBox virtualization tool. Considering differences on screen resolution in mobile devices, I preferred to use an iPhone 6, an iPhone7 and an iPhone X to perform manual testing for iOS mobile browsers.

I also made a quick research on the Internet to find out on-trend tools for measuring readability, legibility and comprehension of the content, then decided to use the Wave and Lighthouse plugins, as they were free of charge and supported by Chrome browser.
